Visual Merchandising, or visual presentation, means to communicate a store's fashion, values and sending quality message/s to prospective customers. General duties of a visual merchandiser include: (a) Design and install displays of selected merchandise; (b) Follow recommended display designs given by the display manager; (c) Assemble, dress, and group mannequins; (d) Construct, paint, cover and arrange display props; (e) Arrange and organise merchandise within a display; (f) Assemble and arrange fixtures following a pre-selected plan; (g) Request/create signs and copy for a display; (h) Stock and store all display props; (i) Clean and maintain all display areas, including windows, showcases, ledges and wall units; (j) Liase/communicate with sales associates, management and customers.
Visual Merchandiser Executives :
- Conceptualise and execution of display
- Planned and organised schedules for all promotions carried out within the store.
- Conduct monthly/fortnightly meetings within the visual department
- Control/manage budget - allocation of funds for different projects
- Purchase of props and engagement of contractors etc
·-Act as liaison between the central visual staff and branch store personnel on presentation and problems.
- Interpret and act on visual presentation problems within the manager's own store
- Relate any visual problems to the central visual merchandising department
- Train staff and store personnel on daily basis in new techniques
- Work daily with store managers on store problems.
- Inform and solve problems - for example, merchandise classifications, fix-turing and lighting and housekeeping issues
- Communicate with the fashion merchandisers/buyers on trend problems.
- Conduct training/update visual staff -eg. display techniques, trends etc
- Follow store policies and monitor staff
- Interview personnel for staff vacancies.
- Monitor and approve general fixture use and vendor fixtures.
Visual Merchandiser Manager/Director:
- Designing store image (in conjunction with management's direction)
- Store planning (in some store)
- Train display staff
- Plan budget
- Merchandising concepts - retail markets (home furnishings, men's and women's, kid's and ready-to-wear)
- Visual markets (domestic, oriental)
- Conduct management meetings
- Conduct sales promotion meetings
- Conduct buyer's meetings
- Review of visual deficiencies through store visits
- Maintain current and future trend presentations
- Conceptualise total store presentation of merchandise on fixture, as well as display and shop concepts.
- Attain advance notice of fashion trends from buyers
To be a Visual merchandiser/ Display Artist, you need a:
(1) Diploma in Visual Communication [Temasek Polytechnic]
OR
(2) Diploma in Apparel Design & Merchandising [Temasek Polytechnic]
OR
(3) Diploma in Graphic Design [LaSalle-SIA College of the Arts]
OR
(4) Diploma in Visual Communication [Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts]
Other equivalent diplomas from recognized institutions are also acceptable.

Trade show and Exhibition - exhibition designers for museums, graphic arts areas and for commerce and industry. Works with limited space to visually showcase a particular product (or products), a name or company image, or paintings, sculpture, photographs, or graphics, showroom display and merchandising.
Home fashions - presentation of furniture and home furnishing.
Visual Merchandisers design and create an ambience for the furniture and accessories. Jobs available in wholesale furniture showrooms, in department stores, and in furniture and home fashion retail stores.
Styling - stylist for films, commercials, magazines or catalogues, fashion show stylists, manufacturer’s stylists, advertising stylists and photographers' stylists

Party design/event - conceiving a theme for a party, designing or selecting the invitations, the table linens and service, the centerpieces, the decorations in the room, the favors and planning the menu and food service. eg birthday, wedding, anniversary, charity affair, or dinner , commercial field with planning and executing receptions at trade shows, gallery openings, and place where "taste" is important and a lasting "image" is to be produced.
Special events - parades, beauty pageants, fashion shows etc.
Malls management - Christmas decorations plus other festivals etc
Hotels - decorations for festive seasons
Florist/Hamper companies - decoration of flowers for special occasions and creating hampers design
