What is this occupation about?

A Jewellery Designer creates a preliminary design on paper and after countless alterations, comes up with the final design. That design will have to meet the customer's tastes and only then will it be approved and sent for crafting on the jewel itself. In Singapore, unlike in other countries, the latter is done by the jewellery craftsmen and not the designer. Thus, a Jewellery Designer has to work closely with jewellery craftsmen to have his/her designs crafted accurately. From time to time, he/she has to travel to other countries to attend exhibitions to widen his/her scope of designs and to familiarise himself/herself with the latest trends.

What do you need to enter this occupation?

To be a Jewellery Designer, you need:

(1) a Diploma in Fine Art (Jewellery & Metalsmithing) [LaSalle-SIA College of the Arts]
OR
(2) GCE 'O' level with a wide interest in Design/Art (in-house training provided)

Other equivalent qualifications from recognised institutions are also acceptable.

To apply for admission to the 3-year diploma course in Fine Art, you must have at least 5 GCE 'O' level passes (4 credits and 1 pass including a D7 in English) or its equivalent.
